Once upon a time there was a polar bear

Well, more or less.
I had the great good fortune to be able to buy a wool+cashmere coat for $1. A friend spotted it first. Luckily she is built on compact lines.

Instead it was my size (i.e. comfortable)
It made me look like a lost polar bear.
And I wish I had taken a picture of it before I took out the horrible shoulder pads and bundled it into the dyepot.

At least I had the sense to shoot the bundle.

It's been a rather fabulous present to myself. Every part is delicious (to me, anyway).

But as they say in the classics
...the devil is in the detail.
I'd say the true delight is in the detail.

Even the lining, though synthetic, turned out nicely.

The cost was made in Uruguay. I wonder if that's a sign?

I may just possibly have fallen in love

I may just possibly have fallen in love with New Mexico and some of its people.

The flight in was magical.

Our first resting place was Casa del Sol,
located within skipping distance of Georgia O'Keeffe's Ghost Ranch house.

We were able to cook our dye pots over a fragrant open fire.
We wrote poetry and drew in our journals,
adding local colour by literally rubbing the earth into the pages.

We took an excursion to the Chama River, in a region where the scent of PiƱon was intoxicating

After unwinding ourselves at (or possibly from) Casa del Sol we moved on to Taos.
Here Carpio Bernal Watercrow graciously shared his story and created a special ceremonial circle for us, as the Taos Pueblo was closed for initiations and we were not able to visit.
A smoking juniper branch was passed among us.
There was drumming and singing and storytelling.
Later his partner Rose joined us and sang several of her original compositions
after which she handed her guitar to the man who had been shepherding our flock around the countryside (but is also a writer and musician who can build things)
and there was more singing and music
(pictured below, minus guitar)

we had some splendid studio times, including a little "cheating",
using eucalyptus from a local florist (who was frankly delighted to make some
sales before closing for Easter)
...we also dyed with a local weed, Chamisa
there's magic in the local water,
some of the colour was rather interesting
and
not what i would expect at home.
then we dyed eggs
 wrapped in cloth

one lunchtime i wandered up to the Mabel Dodge Luhan house
and fell in love some more.

i could quite happily live there.

the tour concluded in Santa Fe
where i was permitted to cook dinner for us all
which made me very happy
and
then
in the night
it snowed
which made me even happier,
even if i do look like a Babushka setting out to gather recyclables in St Petersburg.

The group bonded like true sisters and
working with Sharon Blomgren of Arts + Cultural Travel was a dream
so i'm delighted that we will be visiting New Mexico together again,
twice next year....for a start!

being there by the Bay (and some paeonies)

last week i helped my Ma to tick something off her bucket list.
last night i decided to tick something off my own.

Ma was keen to see paeonies blooming in abundance in lovely Aotearoa (so was i, quite frankly). so we went.
it was absolutely wonderful, but more of that later on.

the thing i'm ticking off my bucket list, is a workshop in San Francisco

as those of you who know me are aware
though i have been utterly and irrevocably in love with San Francisco since 1976
(i love you too, New Orleans, you know that...but only since 1983)
i have avoided giving a class there and kept the Bay area as a kind of sacred space.

now i have decided to be generous and share my love. it is time.

the poetics of place : being (t)here on the Bay

-->
Join me in one of my favourite places in the whirled, for three delightful days exploring the exquisite poetry of plant-derived colour on paper and cloth.
We will gather leaves and words, make experiential drawings, print and dye paper and cloth and explore the translation of drawn marks into stitch. From these investigations we will form a series of beautiful folded books that will map our experience of place and through our understanding of landscape we develop a deeper familiarity with our selves.
The lapping waters of San Francisco Bay, the cries of the waterbirds and the splashings of the seals will combine to make songs for our hearts and provide background music to colour our readings.
As usual there will be good food, wine and chocolate. I am carefully curating a lovely collection of materials so you won't need to bring a thing other than some comfy walking shoes, "clothing that doesn't matter" and a cheery smile.
there'll only be nine places. keeping it small and intimate so that i am able to spend time with you all.
please email me for for detailed information

and now back to those paeonies.
they were utterly glorious.

my Ma having a fine old time

there's nothing quite like a G+T while prone in the paeonies

and if you really truly love them
you can buy this farm

this one's for you, Ma

one of the things I love to do in New York is get up earlyish and totter across to the Chelsea Flower Market

it's a visual delight and the fragrances are intoxicating - i wish this could be a scratch-and-sniff post

and then the contents of the gutters had me wishing for a dyepot

more than i expected!

well thank you, all y'all who have written to ask about
being (t)here in New Orleans

the flood of enquiry was a surprise and a delight - the sort of response that makes me want to leap out of bed in the mornings and dance about in me nightie!

now just to clarify...you will have to find your own accommodation

but there are lots of lovely places to stay.

as a visitor i'd be looking for somewhere in the Bywater, Marigny, Treme
and then [if you have not a bicycle or other wheeled transport] you can just catch the 88 bus down St Claude
hop off at Caffin Ave
and enjoy a lovely walk southward [well, technically south-southwest] to reach the Chateau
